Prologue
Sometimes life can spring surprises your way whether you want it to or not. Some are good surprises - a new car, acceptance into University, winning the lottery – and others are... Well, bad surprises.
Honestly, I think I have had more than my fair share of surprises, and not of the good sort.
My Best friend hating me, my cat getting run over, my uncle in jail, my family split... My mother’s death.
I guess the last one was the most painful of them all. She was the one who took me with her when she and Kyle divorced. I was the pillar of her support, and she was the sun to my Earth...
I never thought she would go as far as to hang herself.
I still remember that day clearly as if it were only yesterday. But in fact, it was a little over a month ago...
"Mom, I'm home!" I yelled as I opened the door to a small hallway. "Sorry I'm a little late! I was held back for baseball practice..." I threw my school bag to the side and slipped off my shoes. "You know, that school should really get better equipment." I started talking, making my way down the hallway and through to the kitchen, grabbing myself a glass of cranberry juice. "So how was your day?" I asked, entering the living room, happily sipping my cranberry juice. "Mom? You there?" I asked, before lowering my glass from my lips.
There was a clatter. My hand had weakened and the glass fell from my grasp onto the carpet staining it a crimson red. "M-mom...?" My voice was weak.
I couldn't breathe.
It was as if I was the one in my mother's position. I was choking. My lungs wouldn't fill with air. I couldn't breathe... I couldn't see... I couldn't hear...
Mom... Please tell me this is some sick joke. Please. Mom? I thought to myself, unable to find my voice.
I saw her limp body rotate slowly from the noose with a chair toppled over beneath her.
I couldn't feel my legs, or my arms, or my heart. My life all but suddenly collapsed in that fleeting instant. I fell under the weight of my body, feeling like my legs were no longer there. I couldn't see through the tears, I couldn't see my mother's body, I couldn't see my life, I couldn't see anything.
All I could do was stare. My mind had gone blank. I couldn't even tell you who she was. But I knew who she was. And I knew she was dead.
I tried to get myself back to reality and out of my stricken fear. Get yourself together, Freesia. I tried to blink the tears away, so that I could see at least a little solid shape. I tried to find my legs and push my body to my feet, but I couldn't.
I managed to crawl myself out of the room so that my eyes didn't have to stare at the body that was my mother.
Suddenly, I snapped out of it and frantically started to look around. Phone. I have to find the phone.
I saw it on its stand in the hallway and I tried getting to it quickly, stumbling and tripping along the way. I struggled to dial the numbers with how extensive my body was shaking. I wasn't even sure I was even able to speak.
"Hello?" A woman's voice spoke on the other end.
"...Help me." I tried to speak, but I only could make out a whisper under the quivering in my voice. "Help me..." I tried again, this time a little louder, but a lot more shaky.
"Calm down, tell me what's happened." The woman asked sweetly.
I wanted that voice to be my mother's. But it would never be. I swallowed trying to force the lump in my throat back down, but it only made it worse. "My mom, she.... She's..."
"Sweetie, calm down and tell me your address. We'll get some help right away." She replied. I could hear worry in her voice. She knew what I was trying to say without me actually saying it.
I told her my address and then hung up, waiting for help to come. I couldn't move. I couldn't speak. I couldn't even scream out my pain.
I wanted to see my mother... But not in the state she was right then and there. I wanted to see her alive with that joyous smile on her face and her eyes full of pride and joy. Her hands with the comforting warmth that would make you feel safe even if you were in a war zone.
But, she was nothing more than a cold, lifeless body; colourless eyes with less of an expression than a killer; hands cold and frightening like a dagger.
She wasn’t dead. She couldn’t be dead. I continued to repeat in my head, unable to fight the overflowing sadness and the heart-wrenching pain in my chest. I felt sick. Scared. Alone. Lost.
My loss on that very day was just the start of all my problems...
Chapter 1
I sat there in the waiting room, kicking my legs back and forth, and waiting for the inevitable.
A month had passed since my mother's death. I was shipped off to this orphanage almost immediately and today was the day I was getting adopted. Well, I say adopted, but it was actually my father who was taking me into care. I'd rather it be a complete stranger, though.
If it wasn't for my fa-Kyle, my mother wouldn't have killed herself. It was his fault she ended up so messed up. I still don't understand the reason why, since my mother always left me out of the bad stuff in her life. She didn't want to taint my innocence so always smiled around me.
But I knew she was sad inside.
"Freesia." A woman's gentle voice spoke to me, leaning her head around the corner of the wall. I looked her way with a slightly inquisitive look on my face. "Your father's here. You're going home, sweetie." She added.
As she spoke those words, my face turned blank.
I slipped off the seat and made my way to the front desk with a large backpack on my shoulder. When I reached it, I noticed a man standing at the desk. Kyle. I could tell who he was by his face. Even though I haven't seen him for over 7 years, I knew it was him. He was still very tall compared to me and that brown hair of his was the exact shade of mine.
I couldn't even try a smile towards him, I loathed him too much.
When he looked my way, a simple smile played on his lips. But as he noticed my expression, completely unmoved, it faded to a frown.
"Freesia. It's been so long, you've grown!" He spoke to me, walking my way and holding out his hands for a hug.
He wrapped them around me, but I pushed him away with my backpack, giving him a blank look. That man wasn't worth any place in my heart. I walked past him and to the front desk where the woman who called me earlier was standing.
"Bye, Janice." I was able to whisper to her in a meek voice. I went and hugged her and it was returned.
Janice was probably the only adult in the orphanage that I grew attached to. She was actually well acquainte
d with my mother and she told me a lot about her. Hearing about my mother... It helped ease my pain a little. It made me even happier that she was the mother she was, and not a sleazy douchebag. Janice reminded me a lot of her, actually. She had the same red curls and those deep blue eyes, but my mother had dimples on both cheeks when she smiled. They made her look all the more gentle...
I felt Janice's hand rub my back encouragingly "Take care, Freesia honey." She whispered in my ear a "Good luck." before pulling away and stroking my cheek in a motherly way.
I smiled at her and stepped back, turning to Kyle and showing him nothing more than a blank expression. I quietly followed him out the revolving door and into a black Sedan parked directly in front of the orphanage.
I didn't want to spend too much time alone with that man. I didn't trust him the slightest. Why should I?
For most of the journey, I stared out the window at the passing scenery. We were heading out of the City and to a quiet road that led to a large estate. It was one of the very few places I had never been to in the area so naturally I was mesmerised by the multimillion dollar homes with their large gates and security cameras.
My distraction was cut off by Kyle clearing his throat, reminding me he was in the same car as me. "So, how have you been?" He asked, looking at me from his rear-view mirror. That deep, clear voice of his made me sick.
I refused to answer him. How could I? 'Good. I came home from a good day of school to find my mum dead. That was nothing over a month ago. And now the one who forced her into a corner has suddenly decided to take me home. So I'm feeling super perky and happy!'...
"How old are you now? 12? 13?"
16, Jackass. Did you even look at my papers?
"Made any friends?"
Like hell you'd care about that.
"I think you'll like our house. It's very home-"
"'Our'?" I asked automatically, having my head quickly turn to look at the man I daren’t even call my father. Crap, I just spoke to him. But still, he doesn't live on his own? Actually, it wouldn't surprise me if he was-
"My wife and our 4 sons." He stated, looking to me out the rear-view mirror.
...What?
I felt a shiver run down my spine. Sons? 4!? With a hag who wasn't my mother? He had sons with a sleaze bag after divorcing mom!?
"H-how old...?" I asked quietly, turning back to the window and looking at the colours zipping by, trying to stop my thoughts from getting the better of me.
"12, 16 and 18." He stated. I glanced back at him in shock. He noticed and shook his head at me. "They're my step-sons. No blood relation."
"Oh." I turned back to the window, feeling my body's tension relax slightly. So she had a pre-made family...
"I think you'll get along with them. They're good kids."
... Piss off, Kyle. Like hell I'd want to get along with your 'family'...
For the rest of the car drive, Kyle stayed silent and let me have my peace and quiet just looking out the window watching everything pass by. We arrived at a house on a hill shortly after.
Well, perhaps house was an understatement. More like a villa.
The large white building had a modern feel to it, with large windows stretching the height of the walls. White columns were supporting the protruding wall upstairs, just above the entrance and the windows were the height of walls.
It pissed me off. Whilst Kyle was living the life of luxury, my mother rented a cheap house for the two of us... This was just getting better and better!
"Well?" I heard Kyle grab my attention and indicate to the villa. "What do you think? Nice, isn't it?" He stated.
I gave him a blank look and threw my backpack over my shoulder, shoving a hand in my pocket and dragging my feet to the front door. I wanted to get this over with so I could go into my - most likely huge and fancy - room and lock myself in it for the rest of my life.
Kyle made his way to the front door and opened it for me. I rolled my eyes and traipsed in, never expecting to see what was before me.
I stood there with my eyes wide open and my jaw almost on the floor. Who is that? And why the hell are they-
"Jordan, put a shirt on... And some pants." I heard Kyle heave a heavy sigh from behind me, grabbing the attention of the boy sprawled across the couch watching what seemed to be the League Game.
He looked over his shoulder, revealing to me his striking green eyes. They stood out like a sore thumb with his jet black hair and pale complexion to add... And his stomach muscles...
He scowled my way and waved his hand. "How many times does mom have to tell you to stop picking up strangers!? I'm not going to date anybody for fuck sake!" he yelled with distaste in his voice.
Wait, what? I looked back to Kyle, seeing him shake his head in despair. "Jordan, this isn't a stranger. And, besides, that was one time! You were down so I thought I'd try and cheer you up by finding you a lady friend!" he defended himself poorly.
I saw the boy turn back our way with a scowl, narrowing his eyes at me. I couldn't help but blush slightly. I mean, I've never seen such a hot guy so close... And he was looking at me!
"So, who the hell is she?" He asked, sitting up and swinging his arm off the back of the couch.
I felt Kyle push me further into the room by my shoulders. I was going to hit him, but his words stopped me. "This is your sister, Freesia."
Sister? Wait, he is my step-brother!?
His eyes widened a little before he jumped off the couch and made his way towards me... In nothing but his boxers...
He stopped a few feet from me and leaned over to my height, looking directly through my eyes. "You’re... Freesia, right?" He asked. I nodded, unable to avoid his gaze and noticed a wry smile appear on his lips "... What are you, 12?"
I immediately kneed him in the stomach and walked passed him to the wide open stairs with an embarrassed blush on my face. Okay, he is a jerk. A hot jerk, yes, but still a jerk. And I hate jerks...
I turned to the two men at the door and scowled. "My room?" I asked, trying to use as little words as possible and adjusting the backpack on my shoulder.
Kyle looked at the hot jerk and smiled weakly. "Go show her to her room, Jordan." He said, slapping a hand on the boy's shoulder and walking towards the couch.
I heard the jerk mumble something under his breath with distaste, but I couldn't quite work it out. He walked passed me, knocking my shoulder with his arm before making his way up the open stairs. "Come on, brat... You do know how to climb stairs, right?" He asked, turning his head to me and showing a smug look.
I couldn't help but give him the biggest frown I could muster before following him up the stairs and half-way around the house. The damn thing was huge! I guess it had to be for 6 people to live in... Now 7.
We stopped at a white door and the jerk opened it. "Here's your room, brat." I ignored his name calling and dragged my feet into the room.
It was just as I had expected; Bland, modern and huge. The walls were pale cream and the bed sheets were crisp white. A white wardrobe to the left and a wooden bookcase to the right, next to the king-sized bed. A large window stretched from the ceiling to the floor, wider than the bed, with cream curtains draped at either side.
I looked back to the door, seeing the jerk standing with one of his hands on the top of the doorframe, giving me a scowl. I returned the same look. "Thanks." I mumbled to him.
He blinked and then took his weight off the frame. "Whatever. Well, later, brat." He stated before walking back down the corridor.
Jerk.
I took my backpack off my shoulder and set it on the king-sized bed, taking everything out of it.
A black hoodie, faded jeans, converse boots and, of course, underwear and socks. There was also a watch, cell phone, a few books, an ornament and a photo.
I gazed at the photo and my eyes became glazed. It was me and my mother. She had me wrapped around her arms, with that famous dimple smile of hers. I was there laughing with a slight blush on my face. It was tak
en last year when we went to a travelling fair. I still remembered that day clearly and how much fun we had…
I then looked at the ornament. It was a fairy sitting at the trunk of a tree with her wings open and a set of thin-framed glasses on her nose.
She had the same curls as my mother had, and the same blue eyes. She wore a green leaf dress and her wings were a transparent yellow. In her hand, she held a flower. A freesia.
It brought back memories...
I walked to the bookcase and set the fairy and the photo beside each other on the middle shelf. I then took the few books I had and set them out, leaning them to the side, and then placed my clothes in the wardrobe.
As I opened it, I saw some clothes in there already. Most likely hand-me-downs. I sighed and closed the white wardrobe.
Like hell I'd wear any hand-me-downs given to me by this family.
All of a sudden, I heard a loud crash from outside my room, making me jolt. I walked out and peered down the corridor to find two people on top of each other, fighting.
"I'm going first!"
"No, I'm going first!"
Their voices were almost identical. In fact, they looked identical, too.
I knocked against my door by accident, making the hinges squeak, and the two raised their heads my way and a grin spread across both of their faces.
I blushed a little. They had deep brown hair and the same green eyes as that hot jerk. They had a lot stronger complexion than him, and their faces were slightly different. But you could tell they were related.
"Hey, there! I'm-" One of them started, but I quickly slammed the door, shutting myself in my room.
I don't wanna know anything about them, they aren't my family! I leaned against my door, trying to fight back the rage in my heart. Why did they have to be my step-brothers? Why did I have step-brothers? Why can't they just be strangers to me, unrelated to me? I don't want to be here. I want my mom...
